VHS-C digitization – saving compact camcorder tapes

VHS-C is the compact little brother of VHS, used in camcorders of the 1980s and 1990s. Many families find dozens of EC-30 or EC-45 tapes in a cupboard, full of birthdays, Christmas parties and summer holidays. We digitize VHS-C and S-VHS-C tapes for 9 € per cassette.

VHS and VHS-C side by side

VHS-C uses exactly the same ½-inch tape as full-size VHS. The difference is the size of the cassette – and how much fits on it.

The VHS-C story in brief

JVC launched VHS-C in 1982 to meet demand for lighter camcorders. Cameras using full-size VHS cassettes were big shoulder-mounted machines, whereas VHS-C made a much smaller camera possible. The format's trump card was compatibility: with an adapter, the cassette played directly in the living-room VCR with no cables or copying.

Sony's rival Video8 offered longer recording times in a smaller cassette, and in the late 1980s JVC responded with thinner tape that made 30-minute cassettes common. Later came 45- and 60-minute cassettes and the higher-quality S-VHS-C. Both formats were eventually overtaken by digital MiniDV.

How to identify a VHS-C tape

  • The cassette is about 92 × 58 mm – roughly the size of a cigarette pack.
  • It is usually labelled EC-20, EC-30, EC-45 or EC-60 (PAL). The number is the recording time in minutes at SP speed.
  • One end has a visible reel opening that the adapter's gear turns.
  • An S-VHS-C logo means it was recorded with the better S-VHS technology.
  • The case may also say Compact VHS. A thicker, almost square cassette is more likely an 8 mm tape.

Technology: same tape, smaller reel

VHS-C records the picture exactly like VHS: a rotating video head drum writes diagonal tracks on the tape, brightness is recorded as a frequency-modulated signal and colour with the colour-under method. Picture quality is therefore on a par with standard VHS, about 240 horizontal lines. Because the cassette holds less tape, many camcorders offered LP speed, which doubles recording time but weakens the picture and adds interference.

Tapes recorded at LP are more sensitive to tape condition and deck alignment. That is why a serviced playback deck with clean heads matters.

Why digitize now

Camcorder tapes travelled to holidays and parties, so they have often been through more than VHS tapes kept on a shelf. Typical problems include:

  • creases and stretching caused by the camcorder mechanism,
  • mould and moisture damage if the tapes were stored in a basement or attic,
  • broken or lost VHS-C adapters, so the tape can no longer be played at home,
  • signal loss that shows up as noise and faded colours.

Repairing a damaged cassette costs 9 € per cassette, and cleaning a mouldy cassette also costs 9 € per cassette.

S-VHS-C: a better picture in the same size

S-VHS, launched in 1987, also brought a compact S-VHS-C version. The cassette is the same size as VHS-C, but the tape is of higher quality and the camera records the brightness signal at a higher frequency. The result is about 400 horizontal lines, which shows clearly as sharper detail in faces and text.

S-VHS-C recordings do not play properly on an ordinary VHS deck: the picture can look like snow or disappear entirely. That is why S-VHS-C must be digitized on an S-VHS deck. For us this is standard practice, at no extra charge.

How to pack VHS-C tapes for shipping

  1. No need to rewind – leave the tapes where they stopped.
  2. Put each cassette in its own case or a small zip bag so loose dust cannot get onto the tape.
  3. If you like, number the cassettes and write a short list, such as “1 = Wedding 1991”. We can name the files according to the list.
  4. Pack the tapes in a sturdy cardboard box and fill the gaps with paper or bubble wrap.
  5. Include your contact details in the parcel: name, email and phone number.

Do not wipe or open mouldy tapes yourself. Pack them separately and mention them in your message, and we will clean them before digitization.

How much fits on a VHS-C tape?

Recording time depends on the cassette length and the camcorder speed. Short cassettes mean recordings are often spread over many tapes – which is why VHS-C collections tend to be large. We price per cassette, not per minute.

How we digitize VHS-C tapes

We have been digitizing video cassettes in Estonia for five years (kasseta.ee) and handle every tape in our own lab in Tallinn. VHS-C tapes are played on a serviced S-VHS-class deck through a mechanical adapter – we do not use old camcorders, whose mechanisms can damage the tape. S-VHS-C tapes are played in S-VHS mode so the higher resolution is preserved.

The signal passes through a time base corrector (TBC) that stabilises picture timing, and is captured to the computer via S-Video. Finally we check every recording, remove blank sections and save the video as MP4 (H.264), which plays on computers, phones and smart TVs. You receive the files on a USB drive (64 GB 12 €, 128 GB 19.90 €) or via a Google Drive link (7.90 €).

After digitization: share and back up

Once your VHS-C videos are files, they are easy to watch and share. You can send a birthday video to siblings as a cloud link, show old summer holidays on a smart TV or cut a short highlight reel on your phone for a family gathering. Many customers also save the videos in a shared family folder so everyone can access them.

A digital file is not safe if it lives in only one place, though. We recommend the 3-2-1 rule: keep three copies of your videos, on two different storage media, one of them outside your home – for example a USB drive at home, a copy on your computer and a copy in a cloud service. That way decades-old memories survive for the next generations even if one device fails.

VHS-C digitization FAQ

How much does VHS-C digitization cost?

Digitizing VHS-C and S-VHS-C tapes costs 9 € per cassette. Orders of more than 20 tapes get a 10% discount and a 64 GB USB drive.

Do I need to send a VHS-C adapter?

No. We have our own adapters and decks, so just send the tapes.

Is VHS-C the same as Video8?

No. Video8 is Sony's 8 mm format with a thicker cassette and narrower tape. Both are digitized for the same price, but on different equipment.

Can a broken VHS-C tape be digitized?

In most cases, yes. We repair a broken tape or a cracked shell before digitization for 9 € per cassette.

How do I send tapes from Finland?

Send us a request first and we will reply with shipping instructions. You can ship the parcel with Posti (SmartPosti), Matkahuolto or DPD.

How do I pay?

Payment is made by invoice. The invoice can be issued to a private person or a company.
