MiniDV digitization – how small DV tapes become files
MiniDV was the most popular family camcorder format of the 2000s. The recording is already digital, so a correct transfer keeps the picture exactly as it was filmed. Mini DV digitization costs €9 per cassette.
Identify a MiniDV cassette
MiniDV is the smallest common video cassette format: about 66 × 48 × 12.2 mm, roughly the size of a matchbox. The cassette usually carries a “Mini DV” logo and a marking such as DVM60 or DVM80, which gives the recording time in minutes at standard speed. The tape itself is ¼ inch (6.35 mm) wide.
Compare the diagram below with your own tapes. If the cassette is clearly bigger, it may be a Video8, Hi8 or Digital8 tape, or a VHS-C cassette.
Know the format: MiniDV history and specs
The DV standard was developed by a consortium of electronics manufacturers, and the first MiniDV camcorders went on sale in 1995. It was the first digital video format sold widely to consumers. Video is compressed with the DV codec at 25 Mbit/s, and in the PAL system the frame is 720 × 576 pixels. Audio is recorded either as 16-bit 48 kHz stereo or as 12-bit 32 kHz.
Unlike VHS, the picture does not degrade when copied, because the information moves as numbers. Camcorders had a FireWire port (IEEE 1394, called i.LINK by Sony) for sending video straight to a computer. The HDV format, launched in 2003, used the same MiniDV cassettes to record high-definition video.
Alongside MiniDV there was also a larger standard-size DV cassette, used mostly in decks and professional settings, plus professional variants called DVCAM and DVCPRO. In home use, though, nearly every DV recording is on a MiniDV cassette. Recording time depends on speed: a DVM60 tape holds 60 minutes at standard play (SP) and 90 minutes at long play (LP).
Assess the risks: why MiniDV does not last forever
Being digital does not make a tape immortal. MiniDV tape is thin and narrow, and data is written onto it very densely, so even small damage shows. The most common problems are:
- Dropouts: square blocks appear in the picture, or the image freezes for a moment.
- Clogged heads: the picture disappears completely even though the tape is fine. This is the machine’s fault, not the cassette’s.
- LP recordings: tapes filmed at long play often only play back reliably on a similar machine.
- Humidity and mould: a badly stored cassette can damage both itself and the player.
- Vanishing hardware: MiniDV camcorders and decks are no longer made, and the mechanics of old units wear out.
The good news: because the recording is digital, an intact tape can be copied with no loss at all. The sooner the transfer is done, the more likely that is.
Storage tips until then: keep tapes upright in their cases, at room temperature and somewhere dry. Avoid basements, garages and attics where temperature and humidity swing. Do not leave a cassette in the camcorder for long, and do not try to play a tape if you see mould in the shell or the tape has come off the spool – send it straight to us instead.
Order and ship your tapes
Ordering from Finland is fully remote, in three steps:
- Send a request. Fill in the form or email us. Tell us the number of tapes and their formats, and you will get a price and shipping instructions.
- Ship your tapes. Pack the cassettes carefully and send them with Posti (SmartPosti), Matkahuolto or DPD to our lab in Tallinn.
- Receive your files. Digitization usually takes 10–14 working days. You get the files on a USB drive or as a cloud link and pay by invoice.
The invoice can be issued to a private person or a company. Before shipping, slide each cassette’s record tab to the protected position and write on the label what the tape contains.
In the lab: FireWire transfer
We have been digitizing video cassettes in Estonia for five years (kasseta.ee), and all work is done in our own lab in Tallinn. MiniDV tapes are transferred digitally: a DV deck or camcorder reads the tape and the computer records the DV stream over FireWire. The picture is copied bit for bit, with no analogue conversion in between to reduce quality.
During the transfer we watch for read errors. If a passage does not read cleanly, we clean the heads and try again. A damaged cassette – for example a snapped tape or a cracked shell – is repaired before digitization for €9 per cassette. Mouldy or dirty tapes are cleaned (€9 per cassette).
HDV recordings: some camcorders from the 2000s recorded high-definition HDV video on MiniDV cassettes. Mention HDV in your request and we will check the transfer in advance.
Your files and the price
By default we deliver videos as MP4 files (H.264) that play on computers, phones and smart TVs. One hour of DV video takes about 13 GB in its original form, so MP4 is more practical to store and share. If you want to edit, we can also supply the original DV files on request. Files can be named after the cassette labels.
| Mini DV digitization | €9 / cassette |
|---|---|
| Damaged cassette repair | €9 / cassette |
| Cleaning | €9 / cassette |
| USB drive 64 GB / 128 GB | €12 / €19.90 |
| Google Drive link | €7.90 |
| Over 20 cassettes | −10% and a 64 GB USB |
Example: 12 MiniDV tapes and a Google Drive link: 12 × €9 + €7.90 = €115.90. See also the full price list.
Once the files arrive: make at least two copies in different places straight away – for example on your computer and on an external drive or cloud service. Your original cassettes are returned as agreed when you order, so you can keep them as a memento.
MiniDV digitization FAQ
How much does MiniDV digitization cost?
Mini DV digitization costs €9 per cassette. Repairing a damaged cassette costs €9 per cassette.
Is quality lost when digitizing MiniDV?
No. We transfer the DV video digitally over FireWire, so the picture is copied as it is.
What format will I receive?
MP4 files (H.264) by default. On request we can also supply the original DV files for editing.
Can you digitize HDV tapes?
HDV uses the same MiniDV cassettes. Mention HDV in your request and we will check the transfer in advance.
How do I send my tapes from Finland?
Send a request first. You will get shipping instructions, and the parcel can go with Posti (SmartPosti), Matkahuolto or DPD.
Can the invoice be issued to a company?
Yes. Payment is by invoice, issued to a private person or a company.
